'Songhoy Blues: the lost sound of northern Mali emerges from civil war... a band determined keep the country's music alive in the face of pressure from Islamists.' The Guardian 2013.
This brave foursome comes from Timbuktu, Northern Mali, but has been forced to reside in the South of that country. Because so-called jihadi militia have taken control (and to machetes) in the North = no alcohol, no cigarettes, no music... no life... See too: that poignant video for 'They Will Have To Kill Us First'.
So Songhoy Blues is named after their collective heritage and has meanwhile been discovered by Damon Albarn, Brian Eno and Nick -Yeah Yeah Yeah's- Zinner for the Africa Express project and the CD 'La Maison Des Jeunes'.
