Unique concert of an underground Belpop pioneer
What is the common denominator between Gucci, John Maus, BBC 6Music, DeeWee, Stroom, Jlin, DJ Marcelle and Peaking Lights? Indeed, they are all fans of, or have collaborated with, Walter Verdin.
Verdin has just released the double compilation PING PONG on the acclaimed Belgian label Cortizona. The album is a collection of never-before-released works by Verdin, the mastermind behind Pas De Deux, the Belgian band that delivered cult classics like Rendez-Vous and Cardiocleptomanie in the 1980s.
Diving deep into his archive of experimental music (1980-2000), he captures an era of DIY punk spirit, improvisation, and creative freedom.
The tracks on PING PONG reflect his fascination with spontaneous, layered compositions. Using limited resources—such as a Yamaha CS-40M synthesizer, borrowed drum machines, and tape loops—he created raw, tangible, and more personal recordings than later commercial productions
In 2025, Walter Verdin is hotter than ever, as it turns out that from his studio in Leuven, he was a pioneer of everything exciting and hip in electronic music in recent years. Finally, the man is receiving the recognition he has long deserved.
For those who were there in 2014, when Pas De Deux closed The Sound of the Belgian Underground, it will come as no surprise that you can expect a tight and thrilling live concert—one that will hit not only your brain but also your body and soul.
"‘Wonderful music from Walter Vurdeun, the whole record’s amazing,’" — Tom Ravenscroft, son of radio icon John Peel, on BBC 6Music.
"Ping Pong is a fascinating retrospective of a significant chunk of Walter Verdin’s career, from which you can easily draw dotted lines to Matmos, The Books, or electronic music genres that would only emerge later... much more than just a stroll down memory lane.
Will Ping Pong ever become a cult classic? Nope. It already is." — Humo
