'VACUUM': a sound choreography by Poltrock & de Roover – premiere
This is a Covid Safe Ticket concert! What do you need?
Out of a mutual fascination, AB-acquaintances David Poltrock (Poltrock, De Mens …) and Adriaan de Roover (Oaktree) ducked into the studio to let fate take its course. The result: an intriguing soundtrack full of brooding, instrumental ambient within which all sense of space and focus is lost. ‘VACUUM’ arose from these soundscapes: a performance with quadrophonic sound, dance and video, whereby the audience is dunked into an immersive experience.
‘VACUUM’ does not offer you a classic concert experience. Directed by Aïda Gabriels, the music of Poltrock and de Roover enters into dialogue with a dancer, light (by in-house AB lighting man Jan Van Lindt) and video (by videographer Wim Piqueur). Poltrock and de Roover thus develop a sound choreography that allows the audience to hang out for an hour in a field of tension that is constantly evolving. The sounds move from the most intimate, almost claustrophobic textures to monumental and indominable walls of sound.
There is no clear-cut narrative presented. But these interdisciplinary impulses form an invitation for the audience to give their imagination free rein. A body moves on a landscape of sound, light and video. The dancer engages in a physical battle that brings out brute force, primal instinct and human fragility.
During the pandemic, Poltrock & de Roover resided in AB for a week to give shape to this performance. Its premiere is the impressive result.
