BRDCST: Consouling Sounds honours ambient/improv/drone-master Dirk Serries
BRDCST is AB’s outstanding indoor spring festival spotlighting musical boundlessness.
The name is a direct reference to the retro futuristic electronica-pop of English band Broadcast that released inspiring albums like ‘Haha Sound’ and ‘Noise Made By The People’ over the past decade. Artists who feel strongly about musical innovation form the focal point for BRDCST. Our musical gut-feeling does the rest.
CONSOULING SOUNDS
A promise is a… pleasure! After an impressive Consouling Sounds night in ’16, during the first edition of BRDCST (with the likes of BARST and Monnik), AB gave Ghent’s quality underground label instant carte blanche for the coming editions. And see here: in ’18 we’re actually celebrating the 10th anniversary of the label in style with ambient/improv/drone-master Dirk Serries as central figure.
DIRK SERRIES
He refused to be labelled a guitarist but IS a master of minimal guitar drones. He was active under the name vidnaObmana – Serbian for optical illusion – since the early ‘80s, as of ’05 under the moniker Fear Falls Burning and since’12 under his own name. His CV looks impressive: he has shared a stage with My Bloody Valentine and Low, worked together with Cult of Luna and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh) and wrote commissioned works for both VPRO and the Biennial in Rotterdam. What’s more, he has a fascination for jazz (see: The label A New Wave of Jazz that he takes care of) and is convinced that music is there to be heard rather than seen.
Anything to add to that, Dirk?
What’s more, he made it onto the bill of Roadburn or onto the stage of, say, the famous Jazzhouse (Denmark) with this trio.
FEAR FALLS BURNING (b/uk/se)
Fear Falls Burning was never really officially written off but rather put on hold. Serries brings FFB back to life especially for BRDCST, this time with Tim Bertilsson (drums) and British saxophonist Colin Webster in the harness.
SCATTERWOUND (b/d)
Noisy guitars and floating soundscapes from the hand of Dirk Serries and N. (or, guitarist Hellmut Neidhart). Close your eyes and think Dylan Carson (Earth) meets Stephen 0’ Malley (Sunn 0))).
STRATOSPHERE w/ DIRK SERRIES (b)
Project of compatriot Ronald Mariën that gives a nod to shoegaze. Crucial feat: ‘In a Place of Mutual Understanding’ from ’13.
