DM Stith is David Michael Stith. Who? Until now, this discreet American hid behind the dials of impressive productions like My Brightest Diamond’s ‘Bring Me The Workhorse’. This close collaboration resulted in him applying his recording techniques to his own songs. They consist mainly of folk in an epic electronic environment. Stith hails from a musical family that was active in opera, classical, musical and the church choir of Rochester, NY. His connection with Shara Worden a.k.a. My Brightest Diamond brought him in contact with Sufjan Stevens who promptly signed him on his succulent Asthmatic Kitty label.
Stith's debut ‘Heavy Ghost’, preceded by superb EP ‘Curtain Speech’ to which both Shara Worden and Sufjan Stevens lent their cooperation, sets off a series of odes. In its French edition, Rif Raf speaks of ‘the first album on which the voice of Robert Wyatt meets the mood of Black Heart Procession’ while in the Dutch version each song is said to be ‘a small intangible work of art’. Something for fans of – brace yourself– Antony & The Johnsons, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Sonic Youth but nonetheless Philip Glass.
The previously announced CHERBOURG has cancelled as support to DM STITH.
American Marla Hansen will take their place. She is better known as musician (on the viola: somewhere between violin and cello) with Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond and Devotchka. Now she has become a fully-fledged folk artist in her own rite, as witnessed by her EP 'Wedding Day'.
