◄◄ REWIND
En 2007, l’AB lançait un tout nouveau cycle de concerts intitulé ◄◄ REWIND. Dans le cadre de ce cycle atemporel, des artistes belges viennent rejouer sur scène l’intégrale d’un de leurs classiques. Un disque ayant marqué un tournant dans leur carrière, quand il n’est pas tout simplement devenu une véritable référence en matière de rock national. Il s’agit pour la plupart -mais pas seulement- d’albums inscrits dans la mémoire collective, une sorte de jalons du paysage musical belge. Une série d'artistes viennent ainsi, chaque année, nous interpréter leur pièce maîtresse dans son intégralité, en respectant l'ordre des plages qu’ils avaient adopté à l'époque.
Avec ◄◄ REWIND, l’AB contribue à la perpétuation du patrimoine musical belge. Au cours des saisons précédentes, nous avons eu l’occasion de réentendre les classiques ‘Royalty In Exile’ de The Scabs, ‘Gorky' par Gorki ,‘1981-1984’ de The Neon Judgement, ‘The Kids’ par The Kids, le ‘Nooit Meer Drinken’ de Raymond Van Het Groenewoud, le ‘Op Zoek Naar Romantiek’ de Guido Belcanto ainsi que le ‘Jonge Helden’ d'Arbeid Adelt !.
Trois grands classiques seront au coeur de cette nouvelle livrée : De Mens dont l'étincelant premier album ‘De Mens’ est sorti en 92, Luc Van Acker qui reprend ‘The Ship’ sorti en 84 ainsi que Wim Mertens avec son mésestimé ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ (82).
En hommage à leur contribution à la musique pop belge, tous trois se verront récompenser – au même titre que leurs prédécesseurs – par la pause officielle d'une dalle dans la rue des Pierres qui jouxte l'AB.
◄◄ REWIND: Wim Mertens plays ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ (1982)
Paru en 82, le ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ de Wim Mertens fait partie – selon Wim Mertens lui-même – d'un triptyque regroupant les albums ‘At Home – Not At Home’ (80) et ‘Vergessen’ (82). ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ a été son plus grand succès. L'écrivain Jan Delvaux le considère comme « un des chefs-d'œuvre bafoués de la musique belge ». Les deux compositions les plus connues du disque sont la plage titulaire, qui a été un temps utilisée pour une pub Proximus, et ‘Close Cover’, qui a servi de jingle pour De Nachtradio sur l'ancienne VRT. Ces deux titres apparaîtront plus tard sur la B.O. du 'Ventre de l'architecte' de Peter Greenaway, un événement qui allait propulser la carrière de Wim Mertens à l'international. The Wire voyait en ces deux morceaux des 'cunning, concise compositions that deserve their success'. Les producteurs techno belges Minimalistix les ont d'ailleurs retravaillés en 00-01 et en ont fait des tubes européens.
Wim Mertens s'inspirait alors de l'école minimaliste américaine. En 80 – année de sortie de son premier opus ‘For Amusement Only’ – il publia un ouvrage, intitulé ‘American Minimal Music’, où il passait à la loupe les minimalistes américains, parmi lesquels Terry Riley, La Monte Young et Philip Glass. A l'époque, il voulait s'élever contre « la partition en tant qu'oeuvre d'art » (cf. Xenakis, Cage, Stockhausen,…) et revenir à la source : soit s'éloigner du rationnel pour se concentrer sur l'affectif.
A cette période, Wim Mertens jouissait d'une plus grande reconnaissance à l'étranger que dans son propre pays. C'est ainsi qu'il tourna d'abord en Italie, au Japon et en Grèce, avant d'être accueilli pour la première fois à l'AB (c'était en 89). Wim Mertens est, du reste, toujours extrêmement populaire en Espagne et en Italie.
A l'occasion d'un concert donné sur le sol anglais à l'automne dernier, le très influent magazine The Wire lui a consacré un cahier spécial de six pages et saluait sa voix en ces termes 'a passionate countertenor voice in the same vocal ballpark as Sigur Rós that connect very emotionally with large audiences'.
Wim Mertens plays ‘Struggle For Pleasure‘ sera exécuté par un quatuor à cordes, saxophone/clarinette, harpe, piano et chant et comporte compositions suivantes: 'Tourtour', 'Struggle For Pleasure', 'Salernes', 'Close Cover', 'Gentleman of Leisure', 'Inergys', 'Circular Breathing', '4 Mains', 'Multiple 12', 'At home' et 'Not at home'.

Ensuite, comme le veut la tradition instaurée par ◄◄ REWIND, Wim Mertens sera interviewé à l'AB Club par Wouter Van Driessche, journaliste pour De Standaard, et Jan Delvaux (l'auteur de ‘Big In Belgium. Het Verhaal Van De Belgische Pop’, un ouvrage de référence sur l'histoire du rock belge paru en 97). Delvaux planche actuellement sur une suite qui paraîtra à l'automne et qui répond au titre provisoire ‘Belpop. De eerste vijftig jaar. 1960-2010’.
