La Nouvelle-OrlĂ©ans est le berceau du jazz. Câest lĂ , Ă lâendroit oĂč les Noirs du nord de la ville rencontrent les immigrĂ©s crĂ©oles de la partie sud, quâest nĂ© le genre, un mĂ©lange dâingrĂ©dients europĂ©ens et africains. Alan Lomax aimait la Nouvelle-OrlĂ©ans et lâhistoire de sa musique. Il a dâailleurs rĂ©digĂ© la biographie de Jelly Roll Morton, âMister Jelly Rollâ, qui est une vĂ©ritable rĂ©fĂ©rence en la matiĂšre, et a aussi rĂ©alisĂ© le documentaire âJazz Parades: Feet Donât Fail Me Nowâ. Dans le cadre de notre hommage Ă Lomax, nous nous devions donc dây consacrer une soirĂ©e.
Cet automne, l'AB rendra hommage Ă lâethnomusicologue amĂ©ricain Alan Lomax (1915-2002). Câest grĂące Ă son travail de pionnier quâil est aujourdâhui possible de se familiariser avec les plus anciens enregistrements du patrimoine folk. On lui doit, ainsi quâĂ son pĂšre John, la dĂ©couverte de la lĂ©gende blues Leadbelly et de lâicĂŽne folk Woody Guthrie. Lomax est devenu, par la suite, le plus important collaborateur du service des archives sonores de lâAmerican Folk Song de la BibliothĂšque du CongrĂšs Ă Washington.
Nous dĂ©buterons la soirĂ©e par le documentaire âJazz Parades, Feet Donât Fail Me Nowâ rĂ©alisĂ© par Alan Lomax lui-mĂȘme. Des piano bars aux bouges malfamĂ©s en passant par les brass bands bigarrĂ©s et les parades de rue dĂ©lurĂ©es, le film traite du patrimoine le plus original et le plus prĂ©cieux de la Nouvelle-OrlĂ©ans : le jazz. Avec des concerts de The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Danny Barker voire mĂȘme une vĂ©ritable parade funĂ©raire, Lomax nous montre la naissance du New Orleans jazz. Voir le Preservation Hall Jazz Band en live, câest un Ă©vĂ©nement. Le band tire son nom de la salle du mĂȘme nom qui fut ouverte en 1961, par Allan et Sandra Jaffe, au cĆur du cĂ©lĂšbre quartier français de la Nouvelle OrlĂ©ans. AprĂšs le passage de lâouragan Katrina, la mission du Preservation Hall Jazz Band est devenue dâautant plus claire : proposer aux gens lâauthentique New Orleans jazz. Et certains de ses membres font cela depuis plus de 40 ans. Le groupe a commencĂ© Ă tourner en 1963. Les musiciens de lâĂ©poque ont dâailleurs appris le mĂ©tier avec de grands noms comme Jelly Roll Morton ou Louis Armstrong. Quand ils montent sur scĂšne, ils dĂ©gagent un punch incroyable. Entre intemporalitĂ© et fantaisie dĂ©bridĂ©e.
Jan De Smet, que l'on connaĂźt du groupe De Nieuwe Snaar, viendra nous rĂ©vĂ©ler sa passion pour le CALYPSO sur la grande scĂšne de l'AB. Du temps de son sĂ©jour dans les CaraĂŻbes, Alan Lomax avait enregistrĂ© de nombreux morceaux de calypso. 'Oh, Oh, Pierement...wat denk jij wel dat je bent, als jij niet de Calypso kent... hij is verwant aan Nederland!' chantait encore le NĂ©erlandais Boudewijn de Groot dans sa chanson 'Calypso', en 1975. Dans le film 'Bop Girl' sorti en 1957, on avançait mĂȘme que le 'Rock'n'Roll' avait atteint son apogĂ©e et que cette hype Ă©phĂ©mĂšre serait bientĂŽt renversĂ©e par le calypso, la derniĂšre tendance en provenance de Trinidad. Bien que l'histoire ait totalement dĂ©menti ces propos, le calypso a continuĂ© Ă briller discrĂštement Ă travers la musique populaire. La preuve avec cette lecture particuliĂšrement musicale de Jan De Smet, Ă©maillĂ©e d'extraits musicaux et de sublimes interprĂ©tations live de titres teintĂ©s de calypso.
Et pour clore cette grande fĂȘte en beautĂ©, nous irons danser Ă lâABClub avec lâinĂ©galable Blue Flamingo. Originaire de Rotterdam, Ziya Ertekin est accro aux 78 tours. Son superbe album de mixes âBlue Flamingo 78 r.p.m.â vous fait faire un bond dans le temps et vous replonge dans les annĂ©es 30, lĂ oĂč rĂšgnent le jazz, lâexotica et le mambo. Sans oublier, bien entendu, ces dĂ©licieux craquements vinyliques. Pour ceux qui ne jurent que par le son des Mp3 et des CD, Ă©coutez the real shit!
