During the Ascension weekend, this will be our 10th year cycling 1000km over 4 days for Kom Op Tegen Kanker. All money raised will be used for scientific research into cancer. Of course, the now legendary AB Café teams will ride again this year. And Stijn Vlasschaert will also be amongst them.
Stijn will be taking part in the 1000 km for KOTK this year for the fourth time. He works for CyCLO, an enterprise that promotes cycling in Brussels. “Eric from the AB Café was still seeking cyclists for his team, and his request came to me via my old buddy Otto-Jan Ham. I already cycle a lot, so it didn’t take much to convince me.”
This year, Stijn will be a part of the peloton that departs from Lyon. “This certainly won’t be the last time I take part, as this year I will miss the charm of the afternoon cities. Every year, the 1000 KOTK results in several goosebump-moments per day. When you hear supporters along the route, when you hear your family calling your name, when you ride into Mechelen in the evening. I’ve already made a few true friends in our group, that happens when you spend about 10 hours a day together on the bike. We all ride for the same reason too. Everyone knows someone with cancer, or someone who has died from cancer, and some riders have beaten it themselves. I’ve lost another 3 people to the nasty disease over the past year. I hope that our contribution, and that of others, will one day lead to discovering a medication to control this illness.”
To collect money, Stijn will help sell hotdogs during a number of concerts at AB. He has also had T-shirts printed and will again sell bottles of wine.
In the meantime, the counter for our teams reads 30 396 €, so there’s still 69 604 € to go.
