In recent years, BRDCST headed out into the night under the banner BRDCST BY NGHT. That was how the likes of DJ Marcelle, Waltur (Burenhinder), M I M I, Bolis Pupul, Accidental Meetings, Aisha Devi and Egyptian producers 1127 and ZULI brightened up the BRDCST nights.
This year, for the nighttime sessions, we relocate to our colleagues at BOURSCAUBIRG … BURSCEBUR … BORSCHAUBERG or was it just simply BEURSSCHOUWBURG? And that for two festive nights in a row, to expansively celebrate our musical affinity.
Friday 4 April 2025: Kassie Krut + (DJ) El Kontessa
The New York-based trio Kassie Krut (US) beautifully fuses minimalistic electronics, industrial pop and danceable punk explosions. i-D: "Kassie Krut’s transformation from DIY rock deconstructionists to industrial pop heads feels exciting and rare, a breath of fresh air in the form of a slashed, ecstatic sound.” Their anthem Reckless was honoured by The Guardian, Pitchfork, NPR and Mix Mag with a place in their ‘Best Songs of 2024’.
Through her alter-ego, El Kontessa (EG) the Cairo-based producer, DJ and multidisciplinary artist Fajr Soliman channels her home city’s energetic sounds. Her DJ sets combine modern electronic musical textures and ‘bass music’ with Maghranat (‘a combination of working class popular Egyptian music (shaabi) played at weddings, EDM and hip hop, with heavy autotune use’). Her debut album Nos Habet Caramel / نص حبة كراميل , released in 2023 on the Palestinian label Bilna’es, represents a perfect balance between tradition and renewal.
Saturday 5 April 2025: Toverberg presents DJ Rashad tribute w/ Crop Top Core + iced lattina + De Schuurman (Nyege Nyege Tapes)
The influence of Chicago-based footwork pioneer DJ Rashad remains inimitable. “Rashad will undoubtedly be remembered as one of contemporary dance music's most innovative stylists and most irreplaceable presences,” Vice once summed it up. DJ Rashad, along with DJ Spinn, was founder of the Teklife Crew (which included DJ Taye, who has already passed through AB) and was one of the first footwork producers to become popular outside Chicago, the birthplace of the genre.
The legacy of Chicago footwork pioneer DJ Rashad remains unparalleled. As Vice once summarized: "Rashad will undoubtedly be remembered as one of contemporary dance music’s most innovative stylists and most irreplaceable presences." Together with DJ Spinn, Rashad co-founded Teklife Crew (which also included DJ Taye, who previously performed at AB). He was one of the first footwork producers to gain international recognition beyond Chicago, the genre’s birthplace.
His debut Double Cup was released on Kode9’s visionary Hyperdub label (also home to artists like Burial and Loraine James). The album celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2023, with Pitchfork calling it: "Rashad’s magnum opus, an album that redefined footwork to the masses as something limitless, nuanced, and unprecedentedly smooth."
DJ Rashad’s sample-heavy production has often been compared to hip-hop legend J Dilla and his iconic album Donuts. Rashad tragically passed away in 2014 from an overdose, just two days after his final public performance.
Crop Top Core
This tribute is hosted by the Toverberg collective, which also runs a Brussels-based label focusing on experimental folk, ambient, and deconstructed sounds. The musical legacy of DJ Rashad will be reimagined by Crop Top Core, a band made up of members from: SCHNTZL (Casper Van de Velde), Vieze Meisje (Alan Van Rompuy aka Azertyklavierwerke), Brorlab (Sam De Clercq) and Fievel is Glaucque (Sylvain Haenen).
Someone once described them as: "This group from Brussels plays gabber music teared to pieces with brute kicks, semi-soft melodies, unashamed synths, and a fiery guitar." Needless to say, we are beyond curious to see how they will reinterpret DJ Rashad’s sound.
iced lattina
Also present: iced lattina (BE), the musical alias of Brussels-based BIA. Her DJ sets tend to be beautifully unpredictable, suddenly shifting from ambient to plugg or from trap to drone. Resident Advisor: “iced lattina fuses rap’s raw energy with genre-defying club soundscapes, creating shadowy beats and elusive melodies.”
De Schuurman
The Hague's Guillermo Schuurman (NL) - aka De Schuurman - lights the final fuse. The Schuurman has released two albums on the iconic Nyege Nyege Tapes: Bubbling Inside (2021) and more recently Bubbling Forever. The Quietus: “With nods to kuduro, tarraxo, dancehall, EDM and modern Latin club sounds like changa and raptor house, Bubbling Forever is an essential window into global club music sounds in 2024.”
