Thom Yorke – Beck – Selda - Nils Frahm - Roméo Elvis - RY X & Brussels Philharmonic – BRDCST festival – Ibeyi – Sleep – Courtney Barnett – Tjens Matic - … it was yet another spectacular concert season in AB with an awful lot of wonderful stuff. Time to start looking forward to the summer festivals, but not without a festive and, what’s more, freely accessible final event!
NYEGE NYEGE TAPES: ‘TWO DAYS OF SUPREME ASS SHAKING MUSIC FROM EAST AFRICA’
Under the title ‘Two days of supreme ass shaking music from East Africa’, AB throws open the doors of the AB CLUB for two days and one of the discoveries of the year: Ugandan global sounds label Nyege Nyege Tapes. Nyege Nyege is ‘Ugandan’ (or more precisely: Lugandan) for ‘the feeling of a sudden uncontrollable urge to move, shake or dance’. Exactly the effect that the music of Nyege Nyege artists like Otim Alpha, Nihiloxica, DJ Kampire or Sound Of Sisso wants to generate. The translation of Nyege Nyege sounds even more explicit in Swahili, read: ‘horny horny’.
(Maga)zines like FACT or Mixmag certainly praise label’s progressiveness:
‘Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes are blazing trails for East African outsider music.’ (FACT)
‘These artists travel the world to create next-level sounds.’(Mixmag)
So, for a change, one of the hottest labels of the moment does not come from Berlin, London or New York but rather from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. For those wanting to immerse themselves further in Nyege Nyege Tapes, The Guardian provides more information.
