AB takes over the American Theatre for a weekend.
AB has had its eye on the American Theatre for a while now. The American pavillion – built as a part of the Expo ’58 – is still located in the shadow of the iconic Atomium and positively radiates history. It was designed by the American architect Edward Durell Stone who designed the likes of The Radio City Music Hall and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Address American pavillion : Avenue du Gros Tilleul - Dikkelindelaan 2 te 1020 Laken/Laeken Brussel/Bruxelles
AB will have its spirit gad about in the American Theatre for a weekend by means of an exciting and sassy programme. In doing so, AB maintains the true purpose for which the American Theatre was created: accommodating concerts. They weren't small ones in '58 either: Jazz greats like Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughan were only a few of the stars who shone there.
10:30 - 00:00 pm WIRE (UK) (hall)
Contemporary musical legend. Post punk avant la lettre. Indestructible classics like ‘1.2.X.U.’, ‘I am The Fly’, ‘Lowdown’ and ‘Three Girl Rhumba’. The ultimate punk triptych too: ‘Pink Flag’ (’77), ‘Chairs Missing’ (’78) and ‘154’ (’79). Suddenly, in ‘13, a new album - ‘Change Becomes Us’ - that has been praised to high heavens everywhere. De Standaard on them: “Without Wire, no R.E.M., Blur, Shellac or Bloc Party”. Also: “’Change Becomes Us’ again sounds deliciously surly, intelligent and pretty adventurous.”
08:45 - 09:45 pm MÚM (Iceland) (hall)
Icelandic minimalistic whisper-pop that always knows how to charm you. Already leaked via internet, the superb track ‘Whistle’ - from the soundtrack to the film ‘Jack and Diane’, with none less than Kylie Minogue. Their soon to be released new album contains collaboration from of the likes of our beloved neo-folkie Ólöf Arnalds.
09:45 - 10:30 pm WOLF EYES (US) (bar)
Wolf Eyes – the kings of American noise – are masters of noise production. The band's mission statement when they started out was: “It’s about making sounds that are painful. Making unlistenable and irritating music.” Their musical output fluctuates around – wait for it… – the thousand (!!!) releases, often appearing in limited versions on cassette or CDR. Their ‘regular’ releases – such as the recent 'No Answer: Lower Floors' – became iconic albums in the noise genre.
08:00 - 08:40 pm ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF (Sweden) (bar)
Or Anna Michaela Ebba Electra von Hausswolff. Daughter of famous sound-artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff. Caused controversy earlier this year by wearing a T-shirt from the controversial Norwegian black metal legend Burzum, in public. With her remarkable voice and her impending album on the well-reputed City Slang label, it would seem the ball has started rolling for her.
