Fans of TNGHT and bass music: check out Diplo’s protégé UZ!
TNGHT (the unique collaboration between Hudson Mohawke and Lunice), along with Flosstradamus and Baauer, paved the way for trap: the most recent dance music genre that explosively mixes hip-hop, dub, and dubstep. AB presents two young exponents of trap:
UZ a.k.a. ︻╦╤─ ƱZ ─╤╦︻ (U.S.)
“UZ tunes are drunken energy sub bass and cartoon horn stabs that make my stomach feel weird and my feet shuffle.”
(Diplo)
Because ︻╦╤─ ƱZ ─╤╦︻ isn’t the easiest name to pronounce, we think it’s ok to just call them UZ. UZ is the driving force behind the ‘ŤɌ∆Ҏ ᶊῌῗ† series’ (read: Trap Shit Series) that appeared on SoundCloud last year and was such a hit. Diplo, Flosstradamus, and Baauer fell for their sound and regularly included their tracks in their DJ sets. Meanwhile, UZ’s debut EP was released by American label Jeffree’s, a sub-label of Mad Decent (see also: Crookers, Major Lazer, Snoop Lion etc.). Now they’re in Europe for the first time.
Illunatic (B)
Trap is also gaining ground in Belgium. Illunatic – Pieter Van Gucht to his friends – started producing his own tracks after being blown away by TNGHT on Dour last summer. Their very first track, ‘B u m b a’, was immediately played by Studio Brussel, as part of De Nieuwe Lichting (‘New Discoveries'). Made in Belgium, with international potential.
Ninjato (B)
With the addition of Ninjato, the UZ + Illunatic night becomes a true triple bill. Laptop-artist Ninjato just recently self-released the EP ‘Chronicles of the 6 Samurai’. His nom de plume refers to the sword that the ninjas used to carry. He studied at the PHL - Pop & Rock School – in Hasselt and makes no secret of his love for Flying Lotus, Eskmo and Amon Tobin. In '08 he established Ghent's Caoutchou Records together with a few friends, focusing on underground electronica. RifRaf raved about that EP and wrote: “moddervette, aan de Brainfeeder-stal schatplichtige glitch”.
