Electronic, delicate melancholy and thumping beats
Overwhelmed during a trip to the birthplace of his late mother, Bolis Pupul wrote her a letter. That letter became the starting point for his first solo album ‘Letter to Yu’.
It’s no accident that his sound sounds like a fusion of cultures: born in Belgium as the son of a Chinese mother and a Belgian father, Bolis Pupul also seeks a dialogue between his eastern and western roots in his music.
He mixes elevated electronica – think early Mr. Fingers-ish techno and the exuberant man-machine minimalism of Yellow Magic Orchestra – with the warm and wonky naivety of the Belgian New Beat. The result is playful, emotional, relentless and tender all at the same time.
