7:00 pm SOUNDTRACK BY… AYCO DUYSTER & EPPO JANSSEN
7:00 pm PRE-LISTENING SESSION: SONIC YOUTH ‘The Eternal’
You fall for Animal Collective, Akron/Family or Devendra Banhart? Ah, then Woods from Brooklyn is exactly your thing. The essence of what Woods makes is refined lo-fi folk-pop but then with a serious portion of distortion involved. Certainly the secret weapon is singer Jeremy Earl’s falsetto voice. Their latest album ‘Family Creeps’ was released via Time-Lag Records (see also: MV & EE With The Bummer Road, Fursaxa, Six Organs Of Admittance,…) and is quite simply a pure new weird folk gem. Frontman Jeremy Earl also runs the famous cassette-only label Fuck It Tapes, which already has more than 60 releases to its name. He shares indie-rock band Meneguar with band member Jarvis Taverniere. And the latter also resides with Woods’ third band-member G. Lucas Crane in Vanishing Voice. Under the moniker Nonhorse, he last year performed on the Domino evening dedicated to performers who are strongly entwined in the underground cassette-culture.
8:00 pm GRAMPALL JOOKABOX
Grampall Jookabox is the alter-ego of hard to pin down one-man-band David ‘Moose’ Adamson, from Indianapolis. His latest album ‘Ropechain’ was released via Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label, on it Adamson seamlessly tinkers together folk, hip-hop, indie-pop, electronica as well as blues, punk, deep house and country. Don't be mistaken however, his idiosyncratic pop-songs sound unbelievably catchy and are often driven by sprinting beats and vocal samples. The reviews were certainly full of praise: "From paranormal themes to the genius/madness precipice, this one-man experimental collection bewitches and beguiles on repeated listen." (Mojo) Kindamuzik too: "’Ropechain’ is a energetically compiled medley of many styles, like Animal Collective, Beck and TV on The Radio also do that so well". We're certainly already burning with curiosity!
9:00 pm THE NOTWIST
The Notwist certainly belongs to the crème de la crème of what's happening musically for our Eastern neighbours. It's now 6 years ago already since the band first stood here on the AB stage. That was in the days of the release of their classic ‘Neon Golden’. That it was such a long wait for the successor ‘The Devil, You + Me’ has everything to do with the musical gluttony of the The Notwist members. Their side-projects (Console, Lali Puna, 13 & God, etc…) have occupied a lot of their time in the meanwhile.
Those who though that The Notwist might have lost something of their former glory, get their just deserts with ‘The Devil, You + Me’. De Morgen – that gave the record a *****-review – wrote sincerely: "After a milestone like ‘Neon Golden’ many wondered with concern if The Notwist would ever be able to equal that piece of work. We can reassure them: after an interval of six years the band from Weilheim has made a new masterpiece." Herewith. And also: we saw the band last year impressive and dizzying at work at the Primavera festival in Barcelona. Basically: after three previous visits to the AB: welcome back gentlemen!
