Adventurous & elegant post-indie guitar-pop rock!
That’s right, mate. With a name like that, you’d have to appear in the AB. Also because The Maccabees released 'Given To The Wild' this year. These Brits from Brighton were also rather loaded with praise for that third CD.
De Standaard headlined then: “On 'Given to the wild' The Maccabees prove that pop is no longer an insult in indie circles. Each album is a step in the right direction.''
Or De Morgen: 'Yes, The Maccabees are pretty much the hippest guitar band of the moment... released an excellent album, that introduced them to a broader audience in no time at all... the band swears by a good vibe, elegantly unfolding guitar-pop that is somewhat more layered than you’d expect from a rock band. You can hear a flash of Pink Floyd in it, and a splash of Stone Roses. They even cite Bowie and Kate Bush as important influences. Not bad.'
Also, about their visit to Bota earlier this year: “The set sat right and they appeared quite a bit more powerful live. Personally, I was reminded of the intense post-punk of forgotten eighties band The Sound but when guitarist Felix White squeezed a more exotic, almost African, riff from the strings then the Talking Heads memories were never far away.”
The single 'Pelican' rounded off the set after a good fifty minutes but that was nothing more than a breather for a scorching encore. In those sorts of moments The Maccabees effortlessly succeeded in meeting all expectations: exciting sound, good songs, and the desire to totally go for it.'
Go for it!
