Aussie energetic party ritual à la Ozomatli & Youngblood
Finally returning, after their recent sold-out VK (and an equally broiling ABClub in 2007 !)
The Cat Empire is primarily a live act (they say.) But this incredible crew from Melbourne, Australia, is now onto their eighth CD already. Apparently they've already got the knack of dynamic recording mastered too, as evidenced by the (indeed) brilliant single Brighter Than Gold.
New CD 'Steal The Light' has now been completed (out here via LCMusic.) How does it sound?
We could already read on their website that: 'when your whole musical concept is about transcending genre, and when a large portion of your performance is constructed out of pure improvised energy, it can be hard to know what to call the music you are creating...
The jazz/reggae/funk/latin/gypsy/hip hop tag grew longer and longer, but it was an apt description. The band would jump from one genre to the next, many times within a single song, it didn’t matter what it was, as long as people were dancing... a feeling of beautiful chaos, of ancient ritual and glorious colour, all caught up in the magic of the beat.'
Welcome to the empire of the cat. The Cat Empire containing a wealth of jazz/reggae/funk/latin/gypsy/hip hop! All that, still without guitars!? But with all the more magic, playing pleasure, energy... and wild gestures!
