Frightfully beautiful prepared piano
Silence Is Sexy focuses on the so-called (new) contemporary classical composers that are increasingly gaining popularity in the field of ‘pop music’. They are engaged in the world of classical music but are willing to have electronica trickle through in their work, often resulting in a unique sound.
Lurking behind Hauschka you will find German pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann. Even though Bertelmann studied classical piano for 10 years, he found “his thing” in exploring the possibilities of the 'prepared piano’. His work is inspired by Eastern Asian harmonies, the work of minimalists like Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, and also French pianist Erik Satie.
This concert is a part of a release tour for his new album ‘Abandoned City’ (to be released 17 March 2014 on City Slang).
He worked on the album together with the likes of Samuli Kosminen (Múm) and Joey Burns & John Convertino of Calexico.
