German piano virtuoso with hypnotic mix of classical and electronica
Martin Kohlstedt is considered one of the leading composers, pianists and producers of instrumental and electronic music and is often – not surprisingly, though predictably – mentioned in the same breath as that other contemporary, neo-classical hero: Nils Frahm. His album releases and concerts all around the world have earned him international acclaim.
Kohlstedt describes the fruits of his labour as ‘modular compositions’: the pieces are in constant motion. Improvisation, like audience interaction, is an important part of the creative process.
The Daily Telegraph: "The music's repetitive patterns and modal harmonies sometimes reminded one of other music often described as hypnotic, from Ryuichi Sakamoto to Ludovico Einaudi. What sets Kohlstedt apart is the undercurrent of anxiety, and the occasional moments of grandeur."
