mini-documentary & talk about mythical Belgian jazz musician
'Uncle Sax - The Life and Jazz of Jack Sels',Ā Belgium, 2018, 15min, A Jazztime Europe documentary, directed by Lander Lenaerts
The film is a character sketch of the most mythical jazz musician Belgium has even known: saxophonist Jack Sels (1922-1970) from Antwerp. Sels was a pioneer of modern jazz in Belgium and shared stages with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young and Lucky Thompson. Yet it was difficult for Sels, a true jazz musician who didnāt want compromises, to make a living from his music. He ended his short life as a dockworker in the Port of Antwerp. 'Uncle Sax' tells the tale of this tormented artist via unique footage and interview fragments with musicians like Philip Catherine and Cel Overberghe, jazz expert Marc Van den Hoof and Sels' family.
The film will be briefly introduced by Lander Lenaerts, director, jazz journalist and DJ. For Sdban Records, he put together the compilations 'Let's Get Swinging - Modern Jazz in Belgium' and 'Jack Sels - Minor Works'. After the film, you can ask Lander questions about this project and he will let us hear a number of tracks.
