Vintage Highlife-grooves with a funky vibe
Santrofi is a dynamic eight-member collective of talented young musicians from Accra, brought together by bassist and producer Emmanuel Ofori – known for his work with Highlife-legend Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas’ Kwashibu Area Band. Their aim is to celebrate classic Highlife music in all its forms and to honour its influences: from early Afro-Cuban and calypso influences to funky soul rhythms and the Nigerian influences of Afrobeat and juju grooves.
Five years after their highly acclaimed debut album Alewa, Santrofi returns with a new album, recorded and mixed by four time Grammy Award-winner Jerry Boys (REM, Ali Farka Touré, Buena Vista Social Club, Orchestra Baobab, Kronos Quartet). Making Moves is both a celebration of Santrofi’s roots and a leap into the future of Highlife. On the album, they collaborate with artists from the Ghanese afrobeats and trap scene, such as Kofi Jar and Ara.
The title track is about trying to survive on the sometimes crazy streets of Accra without losing your mind “Life has never been easy, so keep moving”, says the first sentence. Buy a ticket and come dance your troubles away at AB Club!
