Cuban pianist enters into a collaboration with G. Peterson.
“A fabulously gifted pianist, composer and band leader...” The Guardian
“A genre-busting tour de force… the lyricism of his playing recalls Herbie Hancock.” The Observer
Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca is one of the most charismatic performers of his generation. He made an impression every time, with his stylishly stunning Afro-Cuban jazz, on each of his previous visits to AB (in ’07 and ’09). On his latest album he now also incorporates electronica. For that, he trusted none less than the famous (now jazz) guru Gilles Peterson with whom he had previously worked to compile the ‘Havana Cultura’ compilations. Fonseca doesn't utter a word about the other (vocal) collaborations on ‘Yo’ – the album to be released this spring.
By the way, there's quite a good chance that you've already seen and/or heard Fonseca in the past. Fonseca was namely incorporated into the Buena Vista Social Club when Rubén González was to sick to still perform. So it was that Fonseca toured for five years with BVSC. Fonseca was also to be heard on albums by Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer. When the latter passed away, Fonseca also stopped with BVSC and recorded ‘Zamazu’, a tribute to singer Ibrahim Ferrer. All in all, he's already released 7 albums under his own name.
This concert takes place as a part of the VW Spring Sessions.
