charming melodramatic chamber poprock
Let's just very loudly state the obvious: this British septet is a must for all fans of Arcade Fire, Ed Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero's, Elbow, Editors, Fanfarlo, The National... For those who enjoy a bit of prolonged pathos, grand melodrama, broad arrangements... The better baroque rock, quoi!?
Revere-frontman Stephen Ellis leads the band inspiringly and pulls all sorts of vocal tricks out of his beard, ones that masterfully fuse with the rest of the band... not in the least with the extra strings.
The formula was already found to be bold in the Bota and at the recent Glimps festival in Ghent, with extra compliments there... from the ever healthily-critical Gonzo magazine.
Or also in the fine French of LeVif: 'la fièvre chorale et un sens naturel de l' épique... un jusq'au-boutisme énergétique...'
Now having completed their 2nd CD: 'My Mirror/Your Target' exclusively signed to V2 Benelux, that trusted house that also harbours Blaudzun, for example.
Friendly people too. Even if you don't want to become a fan, their cast iron 'I Won't Blame You!' still resounds.
This concert now becomes a 'double bill' with the addition of the very charming MOSS from Holland. She has already received a VPRO 3voor12 'album of the year' award, played some much savoured concerts here (including at Deep In The Woods), and even received praise in Focus LeVif as: 'donnent sur les meilleurs titres la sensation de mener à bien le psychédélisme du nouveau millénaire.' Has now already completed a new, fourth CD: We Both Know The Rest Is Noise (on the excellent Excelsior label, here via V2.) You mosst be on your way here already!
