fluid jazz-rock guitar fusion phenomenon
Concert is a part of the VW Spring Sessions.
Pat Metheny is that impassioned American guitar-god. You can catalogue him under jazz or jazz-rock or fusion. He almost transcends that categorization effortlessly anyway, with his distinct, enthusiastic playing style.
His first release was in 1976 and was followed by more than 50 albums, in various guises. He has already appeared (sold out) in AB several times (the latest visit already dating from 2005).
Who has he not played with yet? So many fine names, so many exciting collaborations with Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Brad Mehldau, Jim Hall, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, David Bowie (yep, for 'This Is Not America')...
Most recently there was the CD 'Tap / John Zorn's Book Of Angels. Vol. 20'. John Zorn apparently already wrote 300 compositions for it in advance. From which Pat Metheny made a selection that had never been recorded. 4* out of 5, according to De Standaard: 'both musicians share the same restlessness, curiosity and working ethic...'
Just so you know: who can tell what it will be like live this time? In any event, Pat Metheny is composing new material for a new CD in February 2014. He'll also be arriving with his 'Unity Group'. That's what we do know, luckily we don't yet know what exactly to expect.
Except for this line-up: Antonio Sanchez (drums); Chris Potter (saxophone); Ben Williams (bass) & Giulio Carmassi (multi-instrumentalist)!?
