Yet another evening of exciting improvisational music
There is rarely an opportunity to see analogue synth wizard Thomas Lehn and sublime reed-blower John Butcher work together as a duo.
Farida Amadou reduces the playing of electric bass to its essence during the presentation of her first solo release .
THOMAS LEHN (GER) & JOHN BUTCHER (UK)
We mostly know Thomas Lehn from his years of dedicated work with the EMS Synthi A, a unique analogue synthesizer from the seventies. Aside collaborations with artists like Marcus Schmickler, Han Bennink, Andy Moor (The Ex), eRikm… he has also developed a unique sound in the world of electronic music in his solo work.
Woodwind player (tenor and soprano saxophone, clarinet) John Butcher once started out as a doctor of physics, but he soon left the academic world to focus entirely upon music. His work varies from improvisation and own compositions via multi-track to feedback-based works performed in spaces with unusual acoustics and atypical concert locations. He has worked with the greats of the improv world – people like Derek Bailey, John Tilbury, John Stevens, The Ex and Gerry Hemingway – and was previously a guest of the Oorstof series in trio with cellist Okkyung Lee & drummer Mark Sanders and in duo with drummer percussionist Gino Robair.
FARIDA AMADOU (B)
We start the evening by presenting the first solo release from bass-player Farida Amadou, one of the most remarkable new stars of the European improv-heavens. As autodidact, she draws the most exciting sounds out of her Fender bass without losing sight of musicality. In her (currently) short musical career, she has has proven herself (inter)nationally in challenging collaborations with greats like Peter Brötzmann, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Ken Vandermark, Marker, Mette Rasmussen, Hanne De Backer, Wolf Eyes, Audrey Lauro and Julien Desprez. Since their first encounter at the Summer Bummer Festival in 2016, she has been playing with English drummer Steve Noble (Rip Rig & Panic, Æthenor, Saint Francis Duo) on a regular basis and in 2018 she was even a part of punk-combo Cocaine Piss, (from Luik).
This concert is organized in collaboration with Oorstof
