With this fine quote, Ben Lamdin, the man behind Nostalgia 77, proves that he knows where De Kreun wants to go with the ‘Straight No Seater’ concept: "Before jazz was a technical music it was an emotional and popular music, it is this kind of music we should be nostalgic for."
Not that the music of Nostalgia 77 from Britain has that much to do with nostalgia. This many-membered gang starts out with tasty funk and hip-hop beats and then mixes it with wonderfully relaxed jazz with room for improvisation. Jazz is becoming increasingly central to the evolution of the band. On the first few records, Nostalgia 77 was mostly Ben Larndin who did his homework in the studio and then added some jazz touches afterwards. Playing live is now most important and the band joins the select club that Cinematic Orchestra and Koop also belong to. Guru Gilles Peterson was a fan from the start and with the much appreciated cover of ‘Seven Nation Army’ (White Stripes) a broader audience has acquired a taste for them too.
On this night Nostalgia 77 receives the company of Lizzy Parks. Lizzy has already been playing with Nostalgia in the live-show for quite a while, had a lead role on their last CD ‘Everything Under The Sun’ and is worth seeing in her own rite.
With the accompaniment of Nostalgia 77 (the band) she'll open the show with her repertoire, which can be situated between the cutting edge of Björk and the jazz melodies of Ella Fitzgerald.
