The importance of the Total Refreshment Centre for British music, the London jazz scene and the cultural life of Hackney cannot be emphasized enough.

Established in 2012, in what was originally a Caribbean 'social club', the TRC very quickly became one of the most important cultural institutions in London. With top concerts by a series of (now globally acclaimend) artists (a.o. Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd, Sampha and Ezra Collective), an own recording studio, and room for residences… in only a few years’ time, it has become a creative hub of great importance for an entire generation of musicians and the Hackney community (the neighbourhood where the centre is situated).

Journalist, cultural commentator and ‘TRC family friend’ Emma Warren will present her book/ manifesto ‘Make Some Space: Tuning Into Total Refreshment Center’ (pub. Sweet Machine) that was released earlier this year. Aside from talking about the TRC itself, she will also critically discuss the importance cultural institutions can have for a city and its people and which (political) dangers threaten ‘musical communities’.
