UK nu-folkie? Solo, strong & 'once an eagle'!
Laura Marling, barely mature, already won a Brit Award and on to her fourth CD: 'Once I Was An Eagle' (via V2).
All those other CD titles even: 'Alas, I Can Not Swim', 'I Speak Because I Can' and 'A Creature I Don't Know': intriguing, don't you think?
Where exactly can it be situated? With the neo- or nu-folk of friends Mumford & Sons and Noah & The Whale? Agreed, but good ears also hear pop, rock, blues and jazz in it. That, with the skilled assistance of producer Ethan Johns, of course.
The songs that arise from this personal cocktail are invariably gems. Take, for example, that recent Springsteen cover of Dancing In The Dark with Eddie Berman for The Lab TV (be sure to look a little further below!)
And live? Ask that of the audience for the sold-out ABFlex, March 2012. Or just find out why she made it into the selection for Later With Jools, again!?
A recent MAD Le Soir too, about 'Once...': '***La maturité de Marling pourrait sonner comme un gros mot pour cette Anglaise mais la légèreté et la beauté de son songwriting reste admirable même après 4 albums.'
Or even better, De Morgen: 'CD of the week 4,5/5... it is certainly not forbidden to think of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake... the sound of a girl that becomes a woman and resolutely flies with her own wings.'
Sparkling Marling!
Laura is now bringing Marika along as support-act: Britain's Marika Hackman with her first 'mini album' That Iron Taste, produced by Charlie-'Alt J'- Andrew!
