A bit of jazz, a bit of broken beat, a bit of house = lots of fun
Brussels-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Kuna Maze, aka Edouard Gilbert, creates a unique blend of jazz, nu-jazz, broken beat and house. Inspired by the flourishing British jazz scene, he brings together jazz (as a point of departure) and genres like house and dub, experimenting freely and not hindered by boundaries. Despite the broadly ranging influences, his music remains coherent and distinctive. Although Kuna Maze usually composes and produces solo, he performs live with a band.
His new album Layers will be out on 7 March 2025 and is heavily influenced by tour experiences with his band. He wanted to capture the energy and improvisation of the live shows in an album that goes even deeper into his jazz influences, but still retains the power of electronic music.
Instead of working with samples, he recorded his compositions together with the band in the studio. That’s how he could convey the emotion and spontaneity of his live shows on the album. Layers comes into its own at home during a deep listening session, but also gives a foretaste of the energy of his live performances.
