Anga Diaz' twins: neo soul, voodoo & world chanson
Ibeyi is twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz, the daughters of Anga Diaz, the percussionist from the Buena Vista Social Club.
A fresh Franco-Cuban pair, as they grew up in France. It is from there that they will soon be releasing their debut upon us too (here via Beggars.)
Ibeyi even means 'twin' in Yoruba, the language or voodoo cult that they definitely inherited along their father's side. But they just as eagerly cite Frank Ocean or James Blake as sources of inspiration and also sing wonderfully in English.
Beautiful harmonies, percussion and piano: Naomi and Lisa-Kainde (whose collective age is not even 40!?) don't need more than that to, according to Les Inrocks: 'Ă©voque une liturgie nĂ©o-soul, une cĂ©rĂ©monie secrĂšte prĂ©sidĂ©e par les grandes prĂȘtresses Björk et CocoRosie... l'envoĂ»tement a dĂ©jĂ commencĂ©.'
