GET WELL SOON + MERZ
'Rest Now, Weary Head! You Will Get Well Soon' is (to put it mildly) a most bizarre title for the debut album of the German band Get Well Soon. Well now 'band' maybe a big word, as the 25 year-old German Konstantin Gropper wrote this fine CD entirely alone. Musically he finds inspiration in diverse genres like electronica, soundtracks, Motown pop and darker alt.rock. Perfect stuff for fans of Arcade Fire, The National, or even Radiohead. Take into account his daring (he even puts Underworld's 'Born Slippy' through the wringer) and the mildly euphoric album reviews (**** Uncut) and we can speak of a talented and successful eastern neighbour.
'Moi Et Mon Camion', that was the moving title of the third Merz album. Behind this remarkable four-letter-word hides a hermit, the Brit called Conrad Lambert. Acoustic guitars, finely finished arrangements and Lambert's almost whispering voice are the most important characteristics. This is immediately also the most impressive album of his career: 5 stars in The Sunday Times and The Independent, 4 stars in leading magazines Mojo, Uncut and Q, and HUMO begged us not to let this album disappear amongst the over-supply. Because although Lambert's melancholy is sometimes difficult to digest, it perfectly complements the fine, electronica embellished British folk-pop called MERZ.
