Feeërieën 2023
Two grandmasters of dub for fans of Rhythm & Sound and Basic Channel
Our free summer festival, Feeërieën, returns to the enchanting Warande Park from August 28th to September 1st. Treat your ears to the best in contemporary dub, neoclassical, electronica, desert blues, Scottish smallpipe music, South African gqom, hip-hop, and amapiano!
Paul St. Hilaire (Tikiman) x Richard Akingbehin has earned the designation of patron saint in the dub techno genre (see too: Deadbeat, Pole, Basic Channel). The Dominican-born, Berlin-based dubmeister has been delivering first-class sounds for three decades now, swinging between dub (techno) and roots-reggae. A collaboration with Moderat put him on the map for many, while his work with Rhythm & Sound (tip: check out the releases on Burial Mix) is simply iconic.
With his latest album, Tikiman Vol. 1 – named after his former alter ego – Paul St. Hilaire strikes the essence of dub as crystallized by the Jamaican culture theorist and dub doctor Isis Semaj-Hall: “Dub has a temporality all of its own. The genre echoes the past, reflects the present, and anticipates the future in its very production.” Resident Advisor awarded praise: “The elusive artist's first album in 20 years is a masterclass in slow-burning funk.” The Wire went even further: “A modern master whose importance and influence can now be fully recognized.”
The Bug x Dis Fig - A little while back, dub producer Kevin Martin moved from London to the heart of Brussels. He also brought his aliases: Kevin Richard Martin, King Midas Sound, and The Bug. His trademark? Leaden rhythms drawn from dancehall and dub. With The Bug, Kevin Martin has already worked with the likes of Earth, Cutty Ranks, Warrior Queen, Flow Dan, and Dis Fig, the American-born, Berlin-based singer and DJ Felicia Chen. Their joint album, In Blue, was released via grandmaster Kode9’s influential label Hyperdub. Dusted Magazine: “The Bug is a mercurial but known entity, his work always impressive, his choice of collaborators telling, and Dis Fig shines in this setting. Hers is a voice and a vision you’ll want to hear more from.”
