20u30 - VIEZE MEISJE (nl/b)
Vieze Meisje is a collaboration between Maya Mertens and Azertyklavierwerke that originated in the idolatrous sentiment that they evoke in each other. She – a Dutch theatre-maker living in Brussels – pens headstrong "powetry" that is heart-warmingly honest, hilariously funny, and sometimes of brutal elegance. He – cum laude graduate jazz-pianist of the Conservatory in Antwerp – conjures with acrobatic beats, loops and noises that form the soundtrack of a dance party deconstruction that ends in sonorous chaos. Check out her tracks ‘Vlees en Steen’ and ‘Mayonaise’ and become an instant fan. And – without really realising it – you will become a part of the De Vieze Cirkel of life!
21u30 - GAYE SU AKYOL (tr)
AB has paid particular attention to the revival of Turkish psychedelic music in recent years. We recently welcomed folk heroine Selda Bağcan, Derya Yildirim, BaBa ZuLa, Altin Gün and also Gaye Su Akyol to our AB stage. The latter left a big impression on us after her first visit to AB in 2018. Iggy Pop also shared our opinion: "She’s a sparkling, seductive, enormously self-confident, splendid Turkish singer". It has been noted, Mister Osterberg!
Akyol’s music is influenced by her Turkish roots but also by Joy Division, Nick Cave and surf music. Their shows – all musicians, except Gaye, wear masks – are both compelling and charming. Their latest EP ‘Yort Savul: İSYAN MANİFESTOSU!’ speaks volumes, translates as ‘Get Out Of The Way: Rebellion Manifesto’ and thus aligns with the political spirit of the Turkish psychedelic music of the ‘60s-‘70s – with heroes like Erkin Koray, Bariș Manço, Selda and Cem Karaca.
In the press
‘Her voice is a gloriously expressive instrument full of mystery.’ (Mojo)‘A compelling and distinctive young Turkish singer.’ (The Guardian)
