Intoxicating mix of jazz, afrobeat and highlife music
London's most exciting collective of recent years continues to impress wherever it goes. Kokoroko mixes afrobeat with jazz and highlife influences in a modern, exciting and intoxicating way! After a number of high-profile appearances at our venues, including Flagey, De Roma, Pukkelpop, Couleur Café and the AB, Kokoroko are now unveiling new dates for 2024, and Brussels is on the menu!
Since the release of Gilles Peterson's We Out Here compilation in 2021, Kokoroko have become a benchmark in their genre. With their superb Afrobeat/soul sound infused with jazz and roots elements, these artists offer ultra-modern rhythms while drawing inspiration from West African traditions such as Fela Kuti, Tony Allen and Ebo Taylor. The group's distinctive sound is instantly recognisable, interweaving instruments with disconcerting ease and undeniable talent, as on the brilliant ‘Uman’, ‘Abusey Junction’ (which now has over 56 million views) and ‘Ti-de’.
Kokoroko means ‘strong’ in Urhobo, a Nigerian dialect, a description that suits these powerfully musical artists perfectly, whose live performances illustrate their symbiosis and exude a communicative energy that feels good. They'll be at Dour this summer, warming up our autumn with their new sound and their magnificent repertoire. A group that has become essential, proving that jazz is trans-generational and still has a bright future ahead of it. Don't miss them!
