After their visit to a sold out ABClub in early 2015, De Morgen spoke revealingly about:
'With such a mix of old and new, of hip and holy, today the pop world is enriched by another exotic accent. Sounds like a gimmick? Ibeyi is most definitely not a gimmick.
Their approach already works wonderfully on their exciting, untitled debut, but it was live that the duo really managed to captivate.
Lisa – blessed with a wild afro and the looks of namesake Lisa Bonet – was seated at the piano and contributed the main vocal parts. With a voice that constantly commuted between Billie Holiday, Lauryn Hill and a Caribbean second cousin of Björk, she signed for the velvet lining of their sound.
Naomi – with hair in two cute Pokémon-buns – then, in turn, signed for the infectious percussion. She conjured up hip-hop rhythms from traditional hand-drums during the masterful 'Ghosts' and, an other time, even used her body as instrument. Then a song like 'Lost in my Mind' ended in electronic drumrolls, that cautiously seemed to give rise to a night of clubbing.'
