Pianist and jazz man reinterprets Aphex Twin again
French pianist and jazz man Dorian Dumont lives in Brussels and is a key member of the electro-jazz band ECHT! He presents himself with a challenging solo piano exercise in a project focused entirely on the music of Aphex Twin. After a first album, APHEXionS, Dumont will release another album reinterpreting the work of the electronic music prodigy on 23 February 2024.
Aphex Twin’s music serves as the point of departure for Dumont’s musical developments, sometimes composed and often improvised, through which he finds his own playing field around the concepts and poetry of ‘the prodigy of electronic music’.
Dorian Dumont was born in Montpellier (France), where he studied classical piano at the Academy of Music. In 2005, he won gold medals with the highest honours there – for piano and chamber music. Shortly after, he began taking an interest in jazz and improvised music. In 2008, he headed to Brussels, where he has been living ever since. After his studies in the Jazz department of the Royal Academy of Music, he obtained his master’s degree in 2013.
Always interested in new sounds, Dumont cultivates eclecticism and refuses to be pinned down to one genre. As a result, he is able to draw on different facets of his playing. In recent years, he has been particularly involved with ECHT!, a band that blurs the boundaries between jazz, electronic music and hip-hop.
Dumont is also a part of quite a few other projects of various styles. So Edges is the project of Guillaume Vierset, also involving Jim Black and Anders Christensen. In turn, Easy Pieces is a project with Ben Sauzereau and Hendrik Lasure. And then there is also Dario Congedo trio.
