“An LSD trip from heaven” – De Morgen
Please note: this concert is a matinee performance and starts at 5:00 PM (!)
In 2022, Voetvolk – the contemporary dance company of choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez and musician/composer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe – landed in AB for the first time. And what a performance it was! Quite an entry, that big bang for the première of Into The Open – an explosive show in response to the far too lengthy silence/standstill during the pandemic. Into The Open channelled that collective release.
Four dancers and three musicians goaded each other with pimped krautrock anno now. Or: the repetitiousness of Can crossed with the high voltage of The Chemical Brothers. The sophisticated staging and lightshow lifted the performance to a higher level. With this cross-over, Voetvolk was aiming at an audience that also likes to dance, far removed from a theatre setting. What happened in the hall, proved to be just as important as what took place on stage. The audience interaction was remarkable.
The result exceeded all expectations and the reviews unanimously raved. Focus Knack wrote: “Top 3 of the Best Theatre Shows of 2022”. Then De Standaard: “Without a doubt, a hot performance”. Voetvolk also wound up the stages of festivals like Pukkelpop and Feeërieën. Time for an honourable conclusion at AB with a true dernière in the venue where it all began.
