Dutch hip-hop macabre with dubstep beats by Noisia
“Pumped with devilish passion, the trio from Groningen came, saw, impressed, exploded and conquered.” (Humo)
Dopey Rotten (Dope), Jay Reaper and Skits Vicious (Duo Of Darkness)… You can hardly call the three from Dope D.O.D., complemented by DJ Dr. Diggles, subtle or nuanced. They link fierce, raw raps to the pumping, dizzying dubstep beats of city-mates Noisia and thunder right over the hit-sensitive Nederhop of fellow countrymen like Gers Pardoel and De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig like a bulldozer with their dark horror-hop/grime from Groningen.
Single ‘What Happened’ from debut ‘Branded’ exploded onto the 'net in 2011 (over 10 million views on YouTube!) and, in so doing, Dope D.O.D. made it onto the radars of Limp Bizkit and Korn (resulting in support-act slots on European and American tours). Here, in Belgium, they were full-on at both Les Nuits Botanique and the mud-drenched Dour, and when passing through for Feest In Het Park they had a splendid three stars pinned to their lapel by Humo . “These guys really DO define the future of hip-hop with their insane raps.”
They scored an EBBA (European Border Breakers Award, given to acts whose debut's impact extends further than the borders of their homeland) at Eurosonic ’13, and the recently launched ‘Rocket’, forerunner to second album ‘Da Roach’ (out in mid-April via Rough Trade) certainly does what the name promises: goes off like a projectile. So fasten your seatbelts, risk of turbulence in AB!
