Exquisite double bill bursting with electronica and synthpop
Darkstar (UK)
It's quite something as a band to debut at the high mass of dubstep - also known as Hyperdub, and it's even better if you've just signed to the legendary electronic label Warp. R-e-s-p-e-c-t! Their debut North (2010) boasted breakthrough song “Aidy's Girl Is a Computer”. Soon we will be able to savour its successor, News From Nowhere, produced by Richard Formby (Sonic Boom, Wild Beasts...), which once again strikes a beautiful balance between pop and electronica.
Trust (Can)
Canadians Trust last year shared the stage with big names such as DFA1979, Balam Acab, and Crystal Castles. They have more than that in common with the latter: both are from Toronto, both are duos (that are also couples), and both are inspired, according to Pitchfork, by “nasty-sounding synthesizers and the 1980s”. Trust's debut, Trst, sounds a touch more introverted with stiff gusts of coldwave. Pitchfork also described singer Robert Alfons as sounding “At his most accessible, like a less faddish version of Interpol's Paul Banks". For those who lamented Trust not opening for Yeasayer at the AB, this is a chance to catch up with them at last.
