Register here for the Colin Stetson interview at Huis 23.
"Colin Stetson is one of our greatest living saxophone players.” (Bon Iver)
He's a part of the Arcade Fire live band and can also be heard in their latest short-film ‘Scenes From The Suburbs’ (by Spike Jonze). Last year he opened in Europe for his buddies from Godspeed You! Black Emperor (who also released his album via Constellation Records). In ’11, he was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize or: the prestigious prize for the best Canadian album. He already played previously with and/or can be heard on albums by Feist, Bon Iver, Tom Waits, TV On The Radio, David Byrne, Lcd Soundsytem and The National. Basically: Colin Stetson is much loved in professional musical circles.
His latest album, from ‘11, ‘New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges’ - with collaboration by the likes of Laurie Anderson and Brightest Diamond – certainly received an excellent 8.2 rating on Pitchfork. Stetson is a master of circular breathing and the way he plays tenor sax reminds one of grandmasters like Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann and Anthony Braxton. Stetson is also a part of Bon Iver's live band, which makes him hard to get. But see here: we've done it again.
Opener for this double bill will be Dutch, Brooklyn resident, flute-player Jozef Van Wissem. He describes himself as ‘a lute player with a punk rock attitude’. He not only experiments with field recordings and improvisation but has also written ‘musical palindromes’: Pieces that you can play from beginning to end, but also from end to beginning. His latest and also praised album ‘Concerning The Entrance Into Eternity’ is a collaboration with film-maker Jim Jarmusch.
