Cat’s Eyes is a duo consisting of Canadian opera soprano and classically trained multi-instrumentalist Rachel Zeffira and Faris Badwan, who we know as frontman of British psychedelic rockers The Horrors. There where both worlds meet, they write romantic masterpieces with a deviant 60's pop sound - think Phil Spector. A first EP ‘Broken Glass’ will be released at the end of February and the complete album will follow on April 11. Artwork was provided by Chris Cunningham, who does a lot of work for the Warp label (Autechre, Aphex Twin) but also provided the video clip for Madonna’s ‘Frozen’. A first live version of ‘I Knew It Was Over’ was presented in December in – no kidding – the Vatican.
Belgian-Dutch duo Mon-O-Phone in fact usually allow themselves to be addressed as Mr & Ms Phono. That also happens to be the name of the independent label on which they released their superb debut. The press in the Low Lands immediately went for it: Humo (***½): ‘On their debut, Mon-o-Phone presents a dozen highly electric, horny, but equally sinister and disruptive songs with as ultimate weapon the voice of Ms. Phono! It's from the first of The Germans ago that we got such a kick in the guts from a debut’! Holland's OOR magazine: ‘Raw, distorted rock and drum-machine rhythms lead the way but it's the indie-melodies and Ciska's seductive voice that make the songs irresistible’!
