BRUSSELS JAZZ MARATHON
On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 May, Brussels will again become the beating jazz-heart of Belgium. That's when the Brussels Jazz Marathon will travel through the city with a not-to-be-missed programme. The annual rendez-vous for those who love a good vibe. More than 125 concerts, or rather 450 musicians, set the city ablaze! From open-air stages on the Great Market, the Zavel, Saint Katelijne Square and Fernand Cocq Square, completed by a swinging indoor-circuit in countless clubs and cafés including - of course - our very own AB.
To be discovered in the AB: the Pascal Schumacher Quartet
PASCAL SCHUMACHER QUARTET
‘Here We Gong’ (via Enja Records) is already the fourth album from Pascal Schumacher, from Luxemburg and undoubtedly one of the best vibraphone players of the moment. The title refers to a statement by Steve Reich dating from ‘02, and touches upon the role of the vibraphone as orchestra leader in Reich’s ‘Music for 18 Musicians’. But Pascal Schumacher seeks and finds his own sound, different to that of his teachers. His music contains not only complex motives and layered arrangements, but also fractured styles, rhythm variations and fragile melodies. Partly inspired by British pop-rock bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Travis; Pascal Schumacher is constantly searching for similar compositional esthetics, but then created by simple musical means and averse to complex studiowork.
