Finally back in the capital, with his masterful quartet. The CD 'Metamorphosen' has just recently been released via Universal, a very vigorous synthesis of all the elements that make this jazz formation so exceptional. Inspiring and stylish at the same time, always sharp and surprising: this is essential live jazz that can be enjoyed by a non-jazz-lover too!
Branford Marsalis - saxophones
Joey Calderazzo - piano
Eric Revis - bass
Justin Faulkner - drums
Or maybe we had better quote De Standaard? 'Saxophonist Branford Marsalis continues to deliver good albums. On 'Metamorphosen' he plays an own piece, the easy going and somewhat zigzagging 'Jabberwocky'. There are also compositions from his band members. They're pieces that have often been played live. There are pure ballads, such as the masterful 'The blossom of parting' and 'The last goodbye', on which he plays soprano sax in an exquisite manner. On tenor sax he has a full, assertive and blues-drenched sound, just like Monks 'Rhythm-a-ning' that gradually ends up in a lazy blues mood. Drummer JEFF 'TAIN' WATTS colours each piece differently. He can be explosive but can also give the music drive with tight strokes and precise accents. Bassist ERIC REVIS has unshakable timing and a deep, full sound. JOEY CALDERAZZO plays both delicately and exuberantly. The way that these musicians converse is refreshing. Few bands sounds so skilled.' (kvk)
Even Het Nieuwsblad was able to add: '3/4... adventure... one of the most exciting bands of the contemporary jazz scene... top shelf... superb class.' (pdb)
