First Modern Love label night on Belgian soil.
Modern Love
Manchester' Modern Love label just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Their sound can best be described as dark abstract electronica with dub influences. The label's backbone is quite certainly formed by producers/artists Andy Stott and Miles Whittaker (Demdike Stare). See: even Mark Stewart – who we know from the influential British dub label On-U Sound – is housed there too.
Andy Stott (uk)
The face of Modern Love. In the EPs ‘Passed Me By’ and ‘We Stay Together’, he presented a sound that is now often imitated. Andy Stott hangs out at the musical crossing between minimal techno, abstract electronica and dub. Humo on that: “This is contemporary techno at its most exciting: dirty, disgustingly undanceable, filmic.”
Demdike Stare (uk)
Demdike Stare is the moniker of two British producers - Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty – who make an intriguing mix of drones, ‘dubstep’ and ‘world-music’. Their music sounds just as unpredictable as it is elusive. Musically, a nightmare is constantly felt nearby.
Miles (uk)
Miles – according to the registrar's office: Miles Whittaker – is ½ of Demdike Stare, together with buddy Sean Canty, and with Andy Stott he forms the mischievous duo Millie & Andrea. He already debuted recently under his own name with the album 'Faint Hearted'. An album full of sub-bass, minimal techno and ambient.
G.H. (uk)
G.H. are the initials of Gaz Howell. His only feat to date is the EP 'Ground' that immediately blew our socks off. His musical recipe: deep, dark and quasi inaudible subsonic basslines that rebound along slowly and unfathomably. Musical points of reference: Mika Vainio, Andy Stott and Raime.
