Multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, dilettante, polymath: Emmanuel Alias is all these things, but he also performs as ALIAS, the polymorphic rock project with which he has been experimenting and creating in a vibrant DIY manner since 2020. A lover of a plethora of musical genres, he synthesizes his interests in an idiosyncratic way, producing a psychedelic rock inspired by psych, krautrock, dance-punk and hip-hop.
Raised in picturesque Aix-en-Provence in southern France, ALIAS studied jazz at the prestigious conservatories in Marseille and in his hometown. Becoming disillusioned with the strict rules imposed on him, he decided to follow his own path, first in New York and then in Montreal, Canada, where he was asked to collaborate on popular TV shows such as Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, and worked as a music director for Cirque du Soleil.
When the pandemic struck, ALIAS decided to record his own work resulting in the debut EP, It's Not Funny So Stop Smilin', an ambitious work that threw rules and conventions overboard. His first EP was released in 2021 through Simone Records and was soon followed by Joseph, ALIAS' critically acclaimed debut that marked a drastic change in the tone of his music. That brings us to EMBRACE CHAOS, his latest opus to be released in April 2024. Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, on this record ALIAS is both the genius and the monster; the creator hiding behind the terror he has unleashed.
