◄◄ REWIND
In 2007 lanceerde AB een tijdloze reeks: REWIND. Centraal in deze reeks staan Belgische artiesten die integraal hun klassieke album uitvoeren. Noem het een mijlpaal in hun carrière of meer zelfs, een sleutelplaat uit de Belgische muziek. Het gaat vaak om albums die in het collectieve geheugen gegrift zijn. Noem het ankerpunten in het Belgische muzieklandschap. Zo zullen elk concertseizoen een aantal artiesten hun pièce de résistance integraal spelen. Integraal? Jawel, exact in de volgorde zoals de artiest zijn/haar verhaal destijds (of nog steeds) wil(de) vertellen.
Met ◄◄ REWIND draagt AB tevens een steentje bij tot het activeren van het Belgische muzikale erfgoed. Passeerden reeds de revue: ‘Royalty In Exile’ (The Scabs); ‘Gorky’ (door Gorki); ‘1981-1984’ (The Neon Judgement); ‘The Kids’ (The Kids); ‘Nooit Meer Drinken’ (Raymond Van Het Groenewoud); ‘Op Zoek Naar Romantiek’ (Guido Belcanto) alsook ‘Jonge Helden’ van Arbeid Adelt!
Bij deze nieuwe worp staan drie Belgische klassiekers centraal: De Mens die hun sprankelend debuut ‘De Mens’ uit ‘92 brengen, Luc Van Acker die ‘The Ship’ uit ‘84 herneemt, en Wim Mertens met zijn album ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ van 1982 (uitvoering in 2012, precies 30 (!) jaar later).
Ook zij zullen net als voorgaande artiesten gelauwerd worden middels een officiële steenlegging in de Steenstraat naast AB als eerbetoon voor hun bijdrage aan de Belgische (pop)muziek.
◄◄ REWIND: Wim Mertens plays ‘Struggle for pleasure’ (1982)
‘Struggle for Pleasure’ van Wim Mertens verscheen in 1982 en maakt deel uit van een triptiek samen met de albums ‘At Home-Not At Home’ (1980) en ‘Vergessen’ (1981). ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ is meteen wereldwijd een van de meest succesvolle albums van Wim Mertens.
Schrijver Jan Delvaux noemt ‘Struggle for pleasure’ 'een van de meest verguisde meesterwerken van de Belgische muziek’. De twee bekendste komposities zijn zonder meer het titelnummer (dat later in de Proximus-spot opduikt) en ook ‘Close Cover’ dat als tune voor de nachtradio werd gebruikt door de voormalige VRT Radio. Beide nummers zouden later ook belanden op de soundtrack van Peter Greenaway's ‘The Belly of an Architect’, hetgeen Mertens meteen een internationale doorbraak bezorgde. The Wire omschreef beide nummers ooit als “cunning, concise compositions that deserve their success”. De Belgische techno producers Minimalistix herwerkten overigens beide nummers in ‘01 met Europese hitnoteringen als gevolg.
Wim Mertens vindt zijn roots in de school van de Amerikaanse minimale muziek. In 1980, het jaar dat zijn debuut ‘For Amusement Only’ uitkwam, verscheen zijn boek American Minimal Music waar hij het werk van de Amerikaanse komponisten Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Steve Reich en Philip Glass onder de loep neemt. In die tijd zet hij zich af tegen de partituur als kunstwerk of de score als visueel object op zich. (cfr. bepaalde partituren van o.m. Xenakis, Cage en Stockhausen). Mertens zelf gaat op zoek naar een muzikale praxis waarbij de partituur enkel als aanzet fungeert, niet langer het rationele centraal stelt en waarbij het muzikaal-affektieve niet genegeerd wordt. Sterker, het is de zang zelf die structuur aan de komposities geeft.
Wim Mertens kreeg eerder internationale erkenning dan succes in eigen land. Zo toerde hij begin jaren ‘80 reeds in Italië, Japan en Griekenland, nog voor hij in eigen land voor het eerst in onze eigen AB optrad (dat was pas in ‘89). In Spanje, Italië, Portugal, Griekenland maar ook in Mexico is de muziek van Wim Mertens inmiddels immens populair.
Afgelopen najaar verscheen in het toonaangevende Britse maandblad The Wire een special van 6 pagina's over Wim Mertens' werk naar aanleiding van een Londen's concert. Hierin lauwert men o.m. Mertens' zang als “a passionate countertenor voice in the same vocal ballpark as Sigur Rós that connect very emotionally with large audiences.”
Wim Mertens plays ‘Struggle For Pleasure‘ wordt uitgevoerd door stringkwintet, sopraansaxofoon/klarinet, harp en piano, zang en bevat volgende composities: 'Tourtour', 'Struggle For Pleasure', 'Salernes', 'Close Cover', 'Gentleman of Leisure', 'Inergys', 'Circular Breathing', '4 Mains', 'Multiple 12', 'At home' en 'Not at home'.

Nadien, zoals de ◄◄ REWIND-traditie het inmiddels wil, wordt Wim Mertens in de AB Club aan de tand gevoeld door De Standaard-journalist Wouter Van Driessche en Jan Delvaux (auteur van het in '97 verschenen standaardwerk over de Belgische popmuziek ‘Big In Belgium. Het Verhaal Van De Belgische Pop’). Delvaux werkt momenteel aan de opvolger van dit boek (werktitel: ‘Belpop. De eerste vijftig
Jaar 1960-2010’) dat dit najaar verschijnt.
