Wavves verbaasde vriend en vijand met hun eerste 2 albums ‘Wavves’ en ‘Wavvves’ met daarop punk, surfpop en noise in een lo-fi kleedje. De band (toen zanger/gitarist Nathan Williams en drummer Ryan Ulsh) werd onmiddellijk door hippe media en een undergroundpubliek op handen gedragen. Na heel wat persoonlijke problemen dachten we nooit nog van hen te horen. Tot vandaag. Met ‘King Of The Beach’ zette Nathan Williams voor het eerst een voet in een heuse opnamestudio en dit onder de vleugels van Dennis Herring (bekend van zijn werk voor Camper Van Beethoven en Modest Mouse). Williams wist ondertussen de ritmesectie van de begin dit jaar overleden Jay Reatard aan te trekken. Dat de songs op ‘King Of The Beach’ plezierig en aanstekelijk zijn, dat weet ook Phoenix die Wavves prompt mee op tournee vroeg.
Support wordt het noisepop-postpunk-trio Ping Pong Tactics dat balanceert tussen chaos en pop. Houden het DIY principe hoog in het vaandel en releasten eerder een gelimiteerde cassette (elk stuk was uniek) en een EP waarvoor ze alle hoezen zelf zeefdrukten. Cutting Edge doopte hen al tot Talent Van De Week en wist te vertellen: ‘Ping Pong Tactics klinkt als het fout gelopen bastaardkind van Kim Deal en Frank Black dat koest gehouden wordt met een gitaar vijf euro’.
