Zonder The Velvet Underground zou het muzikale landschap er zeker anders uitzien.
Veel artiesten steken het niet onder stoelen of banken dat ze sterk geïnspireerd zijn door VU, denk maar aan David Bowie, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Beck, REM, The Strokes,….
Bij het verschijnen van hun, ondertussen klassieke debuut, The Velvet Underground & Nico in 1967 (volle flowerpower periode) was er echter geen sprake van dat deze band de muziek van de komende generaties zo sterk zou beïnvloeden. Door verschillende platenlabels geweigerd om uit te brengen, doodgezwegen door de muziekjournalisten, gebannen van de radio en platenwinkels die weigerden om de plaat in de rekken te leggen wegens de veel te controversiële inhoud. Veel slechter kon de carrière van VU niet starten.
Om verschillende redenen is de plaat één van de meest invloedrijke ooit en een echt icoon van de rockmuziek geworden:
-de overbekende bananenhoes van Andy Warhol
-de muzikale grenzen die worden afgetast.
-het steeds opzoeken van het experiment en het zoeken naar een aparte geluid (die viool van John Cale!)
-de thema’s die aangesneden worden: sado-masochisme, druggebruik, prostitutie.
-en omdat ze klassiekers bevat als als 'I’m Waiting For My Man', 'Femme Fatale', 'Venus In Furs', 'All Tomorrow’s Parties' en 'Heroin'
In 1967 was het publiek hier nog niet klaar voor, ondertussen heeft de geschiedenis het tegendeel bewezen.
Op 16 juni kan u zich 48 minuten en 51 seconden laten onderdompelen in de unieke wereld van Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Mo Tucker en Nico.
De plaat zal in het Nederlands ingeleid worden door Kurt Overbergh, artistiek directeur van Ancienne Belgique.
