Een duidelijke, luide DIY* double bill. Oftewel twee jonge groepen uit L.A. die elk op hun eigen manier al jaren aan hun unieke klank timmeren.
Van het Abe Vigoda viertal was er onlangs de eerste cd 'Skeleton' (op Bella Union via V2) en dit kwartet komt van een 'background of No Wave, Pop, Darkness and Hope'. Hun muzikale aanpak is gebaseerd op, hou u vast: 'instantaneousness'. Met als onmiddellijke referenties: Captain Beefheart, My Bloody Valentine, Reggaeton...
The Mae Shi bracht recent eindelijk zijn eersteling uit op Moshi Moshi (ook al via V2). En de cd heet, opgelet: 'HLLLYH'. Vorig jaar nog op het Noorse Oya festival waarna onze Noorman terplaatse luidkeels: 'Helemaal vrolijk werd ik van The Mae Shi. Spreek uit als 'de meisje' en onthou: ongelofelijk lollig, boordevol spelplezier, zeg maar Cold War Kids met leuke witzen - dit Amerikaanse quartet neemt nog risico's live en dat blijft boeien door hun uitbundige gekte.'
* DIY staat al sinds de punkjaren voor Do It Yourself (maar dat had u natuurlijk al lang zelf gevonden!?)
Extra voorprogramma bij deze al denderende dubbelaffiche wordt het eveneens Amerikaanse Anathallo. Opgestart in de 'indie alt pop entourage van Chicago', en net klaar met de zeer fijne en sfeervolle 'Canopy Glow' cd. Anathallo klinkt als een missing link tussen - euh - Tortoise en Fleet Foxes, dus niet meteen punk, maar wel flink en uitmuntend! Tegen de datum natuurlijk wel best ook de AB site in de gaten houden voor aanvangsuur en timing!
