2014 lijkt zich als een topjaar aan te dienen voor Mauro Pawlowski. Aan zijn muzikale oeuvre voegde hij namelijk twee albums toe die later sleutelmomenten uit zijn carrière zullen blijken. Zo verscheen er het debuut - ‘Sincerely Average’ – van Hitsville Drunks vol heerljke popsongs gevolgd door de smerige rockplaat ‘Neutral Village Massacre’ van Gruppo Di Pawlowksi.
Tussendoor werkt Mauro - onder het altergo Maurits Pauwels – naarstig verder aan zijn Nederlandstalig repertoire. Wij vonden zijn bewerking van ‘Jonge Helden’ (Arbeid Adelt!) reeds uitermate gesmaakt net als de nooit verschenen Nederlandtalige smartlappenplaat van Galina waar Mauro de tekstarchitect bleek achter te zijn. Ook zijn versie van het door Peter Verhelst geschreven lied ‘Viel Zo Graag Samen’ en ‘Toen Je Moeder Nog Een Wild Meisje Was’ (uit zijn theatertournee met Ramsey Nasr) overtuigde meteen. Maurits Pauwels groep is een volwaardige loot aan de Mauroboom.

“Noteer: 2014 wordt het jaar van Sun Kil Moon, een Amerikaanse folkzanger die al zo’n tien jaar rake klappen uitdeelt, maar de verzamelde muziekpers met zijn zesde worp “Benji” onlangs pas echt knock-out heeft geslagen.“ Kan tellen kwa duiding en dank u De Standaard voor dit mooie citaat. Sun Kil Moon – genaamd naar de Zuid-Koreaanse bokser Moon Sung-Kil – is het alterego van Mark Kozelek die we nog kennen van het in ’01 ter ziele gegane Red House Painters.
De liedjes van Kozelek zijn steeds herkenbaar zoals in “deprimerend, klaaglijk, melancholisch, soms tragikomisch. En altijd zeer expliciet autobiografisch.” De Volkskrant verder hierover: “De laatste jaren is hij in grote vorm, als componist én als tekstschrijver. ‘Benji’ is misschien wel het mooiste dat hij maakte: een gevoelsmatig conceptalbum dat qua sfeer Bill Callahan en Will Oldham in herinnering roept.”
