Fingerpickende singer-songwriter in onvervalst Aantwaarps
Pickin' Daddy of het alter ego dat Paul ‘Pol’ Vandenbussche zich als singer-songwriter, afkomstig uit de Antwerpse zuidregio, aanmeet.
Omstreeks de eeuwwisseling ruilde hij het bruisende stadsleven in voor de rust en kalmte van het Mechelse Rivierenland, maar zingen doet hij vandaag nog steeds in onvervalst Aantwaarps.
Midden in zijn volle midlifecrisis van 2005 schafte Pol zich een akoestische gitaar aan om zich zowaar de ‘fingerpicking-piedmontstyle’ eigen te maken – een gitaartechniek die ruim 100 jaar geleden ontstond aan de Amerikaanse Oostkust als antwoord op de piano-‘ragtime’-stijl. Met folk, blues en countrymuziek beleefde Pol plots zijn tweede jeugd.
De eigen songs in het dialect van de Koekenstad volgden vanzelf in 2007. Losse ideeën ontpopten zich tot volwaardige songs met titels zoals
‘Den engel van Imelda, ‘Anita van de Pita’, ‘Stien per Stien’ en ‘Bollekes van plastik’… en de pen bleef vloeien.
Nu nog de wereld veroveren, dacht Pol, en als Pickin' Daddy kaapte de frisse veertiger stomverbaasd een halve finaleplaats weg in editie 2011 van de Nederpopprijs. Enkele optredens in bruine kroegen later meldde Pol zich met knikkende knieën aan bij de Nekkawedstrijd om er aan de zijde van medemuzikant Raph ‘Lazy Horse’ Timmermans (u zag hem zeker al bij Flip Kowlier of Eva Deroovere) nog verbaasder uit te komen: Pickin’ Daddy behaalde een gedeelde 3de plaats én een ticket naar De Kleine Avonden. De jury viel vooral voor de sterke teksten én het authentieke karakter van Pol’s act.
2012 heeft al veel moois gebracht voor Pickin’ Daddy: met Lazy Horse in zijn kielzog neemt hij deel aan De Kleine Avonden én op het HKM label (Stef Bos, Boudewijn De Groot e.a.) is zijn full cd' Vijgen Na Pasen' uit.
